<p>The flavoring in flavored coffee can be derived through two methods. The first method is through the use of an extract process.</p>
<p>This extract process actually takes concentrated flavorings from the selected product. Generally this concentrate is then processed utilizing other ingredients to help enhance the flavors. This concentrate is then added to the drink to provide flavored coffee. Often this type of flavoring is obtained through a product that is in syrup form.</p>
<p>The other type of flavored coffee is through the purchase of coffee beans that have the flavor added to them. Often this type of flavoring is a chemical process in which there are certain agents combined with others to simulate the taste of any particular flavoring. That chemically induced flavoring could be vanilla, chocolate, hazelnut, etc.</p>
<p><strong>How The Coffees Are Flavored</strong></p>
<p>Before the coffee bean can be used to brew coffee it needs to be roasted. This roasting process takes the natural green coffee bean and causes the coffee bean to brown. This roasting of the coffee bean determines the strength of the coffee flavor. This is because the darker the bean, the more robust is the coffee flavor.</p>
<p>Once this roasting process has been completed the beans are then treated with the chemically induced flavorings. This process creates the flavored coffee</p>
<p>If the individual wants to have flavored coffee, but does not wish for their coffee bean to go through a chemical process, there are other ways to flavor the coffee. One such way is through the use of chicory. Chicory is not only an inexpensive filler used to supplement the brewed coffee, but also provides a uniquely flavored coffee for the coffee drinker to enjoy. In addition, another way of providing naturally flavored coffee is through the use of finely shaved vanilla pods added to the coffee grounds or by adding cocoa to the brewing process.</p>

Each year, the Coffee bush flowers and develops a cherry-like fruit, inside which are typically two small seeds or coffee beans.</p>
<p>There are 10 different species of Coffea bush, the first of which was discovered in Ethiopia some thousands of years ago. Once man discovered the coffee bean, its cultivation and use spread to the Middle East, Europe, Asia and beyond.<span id="more-60"></span></p>
<p>Today, much of the coffee we drink is made from beans that were grown in Latin America, Western Africa, Indonesia and the Philippines, and continental southeastern Asia. Two species of coffee bean &#8212; Coffea Arabica and Canephora &#8212; constitute more than 90 percent of the coffee beans sold on the international market. Depending on the region, species of coffee, roasting, and preparation, coffee beans can infuse a cup of coffee with a variety of flavors and textures.</p>
<p>The seeds of the Coffea Arabica bush are grown all over the world and account for 75% of the coffee beans we use to make our hot beverages. Arabica beans are very flavorful and contain less caffeine than Canephora beans. <!--more--></p>
<p>Coffea Arabica bushes are grown principally in Western Africa and Latin America. Different regions of these countries are known for producing a different type of coffee bean; that is, a coffee bean lending a different flavor when brewed. These different region types are called varietals. The climate, soil, weather, and particular plants and seeds give regions their distinctive coffee bean tastes.</p>
<p>In Africa, Arabica bean cultivation can be found in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and the northern Muslim countries, among others. Ethiopian coffee beans have an easy, smooth flavor and are delightfully accented by floral notes.</p>
<p>Kenyan coffees are also smooth, but a bit tartier than Ethiopian beans. They have a pleasantly fruity aftertaste, as does coffee brewed from Tanzanian beans. These beans are a lovely afternoon coffee, with a milder texture and flavor than its northern counterparts.</p>
<p>A great variety of coffee bean flavors come from Latin America. Coffee beans grown in Brazil lend coffee a slightly bitter cocoa flavor with rich nutty undertones. A favorite of many, Columbian coffee is very rich and bold, a great morning coffee, with a thick, dark texture and a walnut finish.</p>
<p>Costa Rican coffee beans are similar to Brazilian, but have a lighter, sharper, almost tangy flavor. Mexico is also a great producer of coffee beans. The beans here vary in flavor and texture, from dry and light to thicker and deeper in complexion and flavor. Although many of the beans grown in Latin America are of the Arabica variety, some regions grow Canephora bushes.</p>
<p>The seeds of the Coffea Canephora bush have fewer oils &#8212; and in lesser quantities &#8212; than Arabica beans do. Less oil and higher acidity give coffees brewed from these beans a slightly more bitter quality. Despite this, Canephora is still a very popular coffee bean, used worldwide in cheap, canned coffee blends and expensive espresso roasts. Canephora beans typically have almost 50% more caffeine than Arabica beans.</p>
<p>Canephora beans are more widely cultivated in Asia than Arabica. These varietals are known for having a more acidic and bitter, although not unpleasant, flavor. Most of the coffee beans we use come from island nations in Asia, such as Sumatra and the island of Komodo. Coffees brewed from these regional beans have a full texture and a slightly acrid, herbal flavor. Java and Kona varietals are especially popular and make a wonderful morning coffee due to their earthy, almost stringent quality.</p>
<p>Other factors that influence the taste of a coffee bean or cup of coffee are roasting methods and final preparation. As a rule of thumb, the greater the amount of time spent roasting, the darker, more full-bodied, and flavorful a coffee will be. Although coffee beans lose essential oils &#8212; and caffeine &#8212; during roasting, they change chemically during the roasting process, and acquire new, different and flavorful oils.</p>
<p>The darkest roast is known as Italian, which is preceded by French, Full City, City, American, and other, lighter coffee roasts.</p>
<p>French roasts are used to make espresso, because they have a high oil content and low acidity.</p>
<p>City roast is common in western United States, and American roast is synonymous with eastern cities, including New York and Boston. These coffees are often produced using the drip method.</p>
<p>Some people opt for a French press, the use of which results in a stronger flavor and oily texture. Using an espresso machine to brew coffee also lends the coffee a strong flavor, as well as higher caffeine content.</p>

The starting point for great tasting coffee does not come from choosing the right blend of coffee or even the type of brewing equipment to be used. Good coffee comes from the quality of the water!<span id="more-51"></span></p>
<p>As coffee is more than 98% water is should come as no surprise that the quality of the water has a dramatic impact of the quality of the finished beverage. Freshly filtered water should be used when making coffee.</p>
<p>Many domestic and commercial water filters and calcium treatment units are available and most do an excellent job in removing heavy elements, impurities and odors from water. Be sure to draw a little water from the system first, and pour it away. Use fresh clean cold water for starting off the process of brewing your favorite beverage.</p>
<p>The next thing to do is make sure you are buying a high quality bean. Avoid buying pre-ground coffee &#8211; it may be more convenient but it will start to oxidize the moment you open the packet and even if subsequently kept in an air-tight container much of the damage will have been done. The flavor of freshly roasted coffee can deteriorate remarkably fast and within a week or so much of the flavor will be lost.</p>
<p>Whole beans start to lose flavor once the beans are opened, but as long as you keep them in a cool dry place, out direct sunlight and not open to the atmosphere they will stay fresh for quite a while.</p>
<p>For these reasons you should only grind as much coffee you need for the brew in question and not be tempted to grind more than what it going to be used immediately. Conventional wisdom says you can store them in the refrigerator or freezer, but the problem with that is the beans will start to take on the flavors in the refrigerator.</p>
<p>The grind of the coffee is very important to the taste of the final coffee brew. Always follow the guidelines of the brewing equipment used and grind your coffee beans to their specification. Grind too large and the final beverage will be too weak, grind too fine and it may clog up the system. Keep your grinder clean. Grind a little coffee and then discard it, this should get rid of any old stale coffee within the grinder that you cannot see or reach after cleaning.</p>
<p>The average drip brewer will take about six minutes to brew. It is best to wait until the complete coffee jug has brewed before serving. Typically a drip filter machine will produce slightly weaker coffee at the start of its cycle as it comes up to temperature and slightly stronger towards the end. What is important is to make sure you drink the coffee within 15 minutes or the coffee will start to get bitter.</p>

It’s afternoon. It’s hot. And you’re feeling a little lazy. Nothing like a tall glass of iced coffee to get the temperature down while at the same time perk you up to take part in some more fun-filled activities. Whether it’s a special treat or just leftover coffee from breakfast, iced coffee can be a refreshing drink to have in your fridge. Plus, it’s ridiculously easy to make with very few ingredients needed.</p>
<p><strong>What You Need</strong></p>
<p>Okay, first thing’s first, you need ingredients. Since you’re making iced coffee, then that should be easy enough to deduce. You need good coffee beans (freshly ground), a large brewing pot, a pitcher or carafe, some ice cubes, drinking glass, and some milk if you want.<span id="more-23"></span></p>
<p><strong>Preliminary Steps</strong></p>
<p>Place freshly ground coffee beans in the pot and brew. You should know the coffee to water ratio by now. Just remember to make your blend a little stronger than usual to account for the ice melting later.</p>
<p>Next, transfer the desired amount of coffee to the carafe or pitcher and let it stand in room temperature for three to five hours. If you want your iced coffee quicker, you may refrigerate for one and a half to three hours.</p>
<p><strong>Now, for the Real Thing</strong></p>
<p>While your coffee blend is cooling down, prepare some ice cubes and place them in a 10 to 12 oz. glass. Now, pour your chilled coffee into the glass and stir to equalize the temperature. Now add milk to taste and your iced coffee drink is ready.</p>
<p>You may also experiment a bit with flavors in your iced coffee. You can add some bourbon for instance or brandy or Irish crème for that subtle vanilla hint. Just remember that the best iced coffees are those made with darker roast coffee blends.</p>
<p>Here are some more tips to make your iced coffee experience even better:</p>
<p>* If you have a sweet tooth, you may add sugar in your iced coffee. However, make sure you add the sugar while the coffee is still hot for easier mixing. It will take longer for the sugar to dissolve if the mixture is cold.</p>
<p>* After you have fixed yourself a glass of iced coffee, be sure to return the pitcher to the fridge to keep it cool. That way, you can prevent too much melting of the ice, which could dilute your coffee.  Alternatively, you may make coffee ice cubes with leftover coffee from your pot.</p>
<p>* Never put a pot of hot coffee in the refrigerator immediately after brewing. The rapid change in temperature can crack the glass.</p>
<p>* To quickly cool down your pot of coffee, fill your sink with a couple of inches of cold water. Then, slowly submerge the bottom portion of your coffee carafe in the cold water and wait for ten to fifteen minutes.</p>
